
Born in 1991 in Kutch, Gujarat, Deena completed her Post-Diploma in Visual Arts, specializing in Printmaking, from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda, in 2023. Her body of work is deeply rooted in oral histories, traditions, drawing from her engagement with her own community as well as other craft communities set in her native place, her work takes the form of personal research and documentation, where she interweaves her own experiences and emotions into an art practice. one that brings her joy as she connects with different community women, engaging in conversations about their feelings, experiences, and acts of rebellion. Her works talks about gender, resilience, struggles, defiance and identities.
Deena’s recently show casing her collaborative Craft research Project titleld ‘SHIFTING IDENTITIES, with archi Banerjee which investigates the impact of the 1971 Indo-Pak War on crafts and communities, exploring the changes in traditional practices after migration. By examining how these crafts have evolved amid socio-political shifts, she seeks to preserve and reinterpret these rich cultural narratives. Her dedication to her craft has been recognized with several awards, including the Space118 Fine Art Grant 2023-24 and the Kala Sakshi Art Scholarship,2022. Additionally, she has participated in numerous residencies, such as: Arthshila x Khoj Residency, Bihar, 2024; Winter Residency at Space Studio, Baroda, 2023; Sandarbh Residency, Rajasthan,2023.
Deena’s practice deeply rooted in her research on Ajrakh block printing, natural dyes, and earth pigments, where she collaborates closely with the Khatri and Hindu communities. She draws inspiration from traditional patterns, Persian and Mughal miniatures, and architectural elements from mosques in India and Pakistan, which she reinterprets in her work.
Her practice is characterized by a continuous exploration of diverse materials. She finds excitement in experimenting with different surfaces, such as handwoven kala cotton fabric, Kota Doria, and modal silk, which she often prepares herself. Beyond traditional methods, she integrates digital prints and other materials to create complex, layered compositions. This combination of traditional crafts and contemporary techniques allows her to push the boundaries of printmaking and textile arts.
Currently based in Baroda, India, Deena continues to explore the intersections of tradition, history, and community collaboration, with a focus on material experimentation.
